College of San Mateo football coach Larry Owens will be honored on Saturday, Feb. 4, with a Lifetime Achievement award and Proclamation from the City of East Palo Alto for his years of service to the community.
Mayor Larry Moody will preside over the presentation and it is expected that Senator Jerry Hill will also be present. Many CSM alums have been invited to speak on how Coach Owens has influenced their lives.
The free celebration at the Boys & Girls Club in East Palo Alto will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. (after 8 a.m. light breakfast snacks). Following a photo opportunity with “Coast O” all youth are invited to attend a free “Larry Owens Youth Football Clinic” with the CSM coaching staff. Simply put, Coach Owens is the man! Coach O has coached on every level, including NFL Europe, Major College Football, and Junior College. He was head Coach at CSM for 19 years before stepping down following the 2008 season. The Bulldogs have won over 100 games under Coach Owens’ leadership. After two years away from the program – in which he got married and served as a consultant for the University of California – Coach O returned to CSM full time as an outside linebackers coach and academic adviser. Coach Owens played at Sequoia High School before attending CSM and later Long Beach State. Coach bleeds blue and white, has been a bulldog for over 25 years, and has coached or hired nearly every member of the current staff.
