CSM Athletics Hall of Fame Lineup: MLB Record-Holders, Superbowl & World Series Ring Wearers, NBA Player, Track & Field Stars, District Pioneers…

Major League Baseball record setters Scott Feldman and Daniel Nava were inducted into College of San Mateo’s Sports Hall of Fame on Friday (January 23), along with current MLB coach Bob McClure just weeks before they were scheduled to report for spring training.

They’re among the 12 living and five deceased honorees, which included two members of CSM’s first state football championship team in 1925, Milt Axt and Al Terremere, and San Mateo County’s first NBA player, Bob “Big Pete” Peterson. Doug Scovil coached three championship football teams at CSM before leaving to coach Roger Staubach to a Heisman trophy at Navy (the first JC transfer to win that award).

Six former CSM football stars are on the list. Mike Solari has a Super Bowl ring as a 49ers coach. Others include JC record setting pass receiver Perry Parmelee. Baseball and football stars Randy Gomez (a MLB draftee) and Jerry Scattini went on to successful coaching careers — Scattini at Nevada Reno.

Bea Godoy was an all-state basketball and softball player for San Mateo and currently teaches in Millbrae.

Stella Edwinson was CSM’s first female track & field champion and a 1984 Olympic Trials competitor. Marcel Hetu won the California CC mile title and has gone on to an outstanding career as a college coach and administrator.

CSM also inducted current District Chancellor Ron Galatolo and the multi-campus district’s first leader, the late Dr. Julio Bortolazzo. They have provided the campus with some of the state’s finest physical education and athletic facilities. Caroline Silva was a pioneer women’s athletic academic advisor during a 34-year career on the CSM faculty.

MLB Records: Nava equaled a MLB record with his first pitch grand slam home run in his debut and Feldman has a MLB record 12 road victories.
4 Future SCU Stars: Four members of the 2015 CSM Hall of Fame class went onto play at Santa Clara University, three of them for football and one for baseball: Axt, Terremere, Parmelee, and Nava.
San Francisco Coaching Icon: Axt became perhaps the greatest football coach in San Francisco high school history at Polytechnic. Scovil coached against him, at nearby Sacred Heart, before coming to CSM in 1958.
