CSM HONORS LEGACY OF WALSH, MADDEN, RING, DAHLEN WITH RECORD 83 POINTS IN HOF ROUT OF WEST VALLEY

College of San Mateo rolled up the highest point total in the college’s 90-year football history Saturday, defeating visiting West Valley College, 83-0.

It was also CSM’s first Hall of Fame game,  honoring the legacy of such former stars as Super Bowl ring holders Bill Walsh, John Madden, Bill Ring, and Neal Dahlen.  (They own 13 total rings.)

Previous CSM high score was 77 points, also against West Valley (now 0-3), last season.

Freshman running back Jarrell Brown, out of Hillsdale High, equaled San Mateo’s school record of four TDs, held by six others – recently equaled by Julian Edelman in 2005(current return specialist for the New England Patriots). Brown rushed for 106 yards on 11 carries and sophomore Vaughn Smith (Menlo-Atherton) had 107 on nine rushes, including two scores.

The Bulldogs (2-1) led, 55-0, at the half and did their best to slow down the onslaught.

They threw only five passes in the game, completing all five – the last a four-yard scoring toss from Miles Freeman to tight end Chris Chang with just 2:18 elapsed in the second quarter.

The 35-0 lead at that point triggered the Northern California Football Association’s “35-point” rule. So San Mateo had to rush for the remaining nearly three quarters of play. But that is something the Bulldogs do well. They average 360 yards a game on the ground.

Even with negative yardage on kneeldowns (following intentional delay of game penalties) to help run out the clock after reaching the Vikings’ 16 in the fourth quarter, CSM finished with 434 yards on 47 carries and 515 yards of total offense on just 52 plays. That final “non-drive” was San Mateo’s longest possession of the game, 5:20.  CSM’s offense had the ball for less than total 25 minutes. More than nine of those minutes were spent running out the clock in the fourth quarter.

San Mateo scored three touchdowns on turnover returns – 25 yards by Ron Fields with a fumble, 37 yards by Bryant Hayes with a pass interception and 81 yards by Alex Hubbard with another interception.

West Valley had the ball for 35 minutes and 68 plays, but totaled only 129 yards.  The Bulldogs recorded seven sacks and allowed none.

This was the third time in the series that a CSM back has scored four touchdowns against West Valley.  Here is the CSM record list for most touchdowns scored in a game:
